An ambitious and talented pianist, Roland Wade, nonetheless lacks true artistic genius. He is ruthless, single-minded, and can only think of one person: himself. Intent on joining the social elite, Roland will do anything to reach his goal. Even steal. This leads him into temptation and he publishes another musician’s work as his own. Leaving a host of glamorous women in his wake "a shop-girl, an actress, a Lady" Roland transcends his humble beginnings.

Then Roland takes Lady Hermione Wakelyn as his wife. She is very beautiful as well as mistress of a large fortune but cold. Trapped by his actions, he needs help. His wife, Hermione, is not going to support him - she is calculator and can be oh, so ruthless. Even her letters force him to think of Gretel - who in contrast is warm and loving... Might Gretel help him? However, she too has reason to leave him to his plight. But what discovery will change everything? Just how is this all going to end?
